About the NHS

The NHS was set up in 1948 to provide everybody in the UK with healthcare based on their needs, and not on their ability to pay. The NHS is throughout the world for the requirement of care it provides to patients.

Although a lot of people believe about the NHS as being their local medical facility, when you visit your dental practitioner, your GP and even your local pharmacist you could be talking to someone employed by the NHS. And significantly there is a growing number of NHS staff whose work is not based in a health center, but who work in regional health centres, GP practices or even in patients' own homes.

More individuals work for the NHS than any other organisation in the nation: 1.3 million individuals in England alone. That is around one in every forty individuals. You will most likely know at least one individual who works for the NHS.

The people who work for the NHS may have jobs in scientific or non-clinical roles. Clinical functions supply care to clients, such as nursing, medication, midwifery, as well as a range of allied health professions such as physiotherapy, radiography and counselling.

The numerous non-clinical functions in the NHS cover the functions required to keep the structures tidy and effective and the organisation running smoothly. Non-clinical roles consist of receptionists, accountants, IT experts, catering services, engineers, designers and plumbings.

With over 350 different career chances, there is a function to fit all interests and qualifications.
